I get asked this question a lot, “I’m a Sophomore. Should I go through sorority recruitment?
My follow up question is, “Do you want to be in a sorority?”
If the answer is yes, of course you should! Don’t anything stop you from living your life.
Here are 3 tips to help you out during recruitment!
TIP #1. Reach out to members you know.
This tip is major.
Sorority members love to talk about all things recruitment. Especially about potential new members (pnms) they know.
When you reach out to a member, they will go around and tell all their sisters about you. They will say how amazing you are and how you would make a great member.
Do you know what this means?
You already have a foot in the door.
If a member is saying how great you are, the other members will be excited to meet you. They will know what to talk to you about.
However, you still need to connect with the members you are meeting. Don’t think you are guaranteed a bid.
So… how do you make connections?
Act like you are just catching up with an old friend and ask questions.

TIP #2. Drop your limiting beliefs around recruitment.
Are you questioning if you should go through sorority recruitment? Maybe you are thinking, “Should I go through recruitment as a Sophomore?” or “Do Sophomores even get bids to sororities?” or “Sororities only L I K E Freshmen. Recruitment sounds like a waste of time… right?”
Don’t let these limiting beliefs stop you from joining a sorority.
If you let these limiting beliefs control your mind, you will be closed off.
Do you know what happens when you go into recruitment closed off?
You will be standoffish. You might judge sororities off of gossip you will hear. You will not connect with the members.
A N D … this attitude will make the members think you don’t want to be a member. They will drop you. Not because you are a Sophomore, but because they think you don’t like their sorority. Keeping those pnms is just a waste of time.
Here’s how to get rid of your limiting beliefs.
Sit down with a journal or piece of paper. Then, write down any negative thought that comes up around sorority recruitment. This step can take time.
After you have written them down, look to see where these ideas are coming from.
Did someone say this to you?
Did you read this on the internet and now you believe it?
Are you worried you are going to be judged?
Now is the fun part! It’s time to dispel these beliefs.
Let’s say one of your beliefs is, “Sororities only like Freshmen.”
Well, that is F A L S E ! Sororities do like Freshmen, and they like Sophomores too!!!
I’m going to let you in on a secret. A lot of colleges have an upperclassman quota.
It’s a rule that states they H A V E to take a certain number of pnms that are not Freshmen!
Let’s do another one. Let’s say one of your beliefs is “Rushing as a Sophomore is a waste of my time.”
It’s if you don’t want to be in a sorority. If you do want to be in a sorority, it’s not a waste of time. It’s a way to find your new best friends and your forever home.

TIP #3. Know what you want in a sorority.
I always recommend going into recruitment with an open mind, B U T … you need to know what you want in a sorority.
How do you decide what you want in a sorority?
I recommend to sit down and think about the type of experience you want. What does it look like?
After you know what kind of experience you want, answer these two questions.
Why are you going through sorority recruitment?
Get very specific with your answer.
What are 3 qualities you want in a sorority?
It can be anything. Here’s an example. A strong sisterhood, a philanthropy you stand behind, activities to go to throughout the year.
These two parts will help you stand out from the other potential new members.
When you don’t answer these questions, sorority recruitment can be overwhelming.
Here is what will happen.
You will walk into a sorority. You will talk to a couple of members. Then, a member will walk you out, and you will go to the next sorority.
The cycle will continue.
It will seem like you had the same conversation at each sorority.
How will you be able to see which one is a good fit for you?
It will be hard because they will seem identical.
Then, when you go to vote, you will rely on gossip instead of your connections.
Here is what happens when you know what you want.
You will always have topics to fall back on. You will be able to ask questions about these topics. You can use these topics to make REAL connections with the members. Don’t forget connections are how you get a bid to your dream sorority.
